You can make product videos for Etsy and Shopify without a shoot by building them from your existing product photos with a template: the photos, product names and brand colors go in, and a short, consistent video comes out for each product. Etsy listing videos must be 3 to 15 seconds and up to 100 MB, and they play without sound. Shopify accepts product videos up to 10 minutes, 1 GB and 4K.

We built 14 Etsy listing videos this way for Elume Medspa's skincare line, one per listing, plus a set of brand and treatment films, from code rather than a camera. This guide covers the current specs for both platforms, how template video works, the compliance check we built into it, and simpler routes if you'd rather use a phone or Canva.

Key takeaways
  • Etsy: 3 to 15 seconds, up to 100 MB, up to 2 videos per listing, no audio (as of October 2026).
  • Shopify: up to 10 minutes, 1 GB and 4K, and your theme has to support video.
  • Design for silence. Etsy strips audio and social feeds autoplay muted, so every claim belongs on screen.
  • Template video means one design system and one product list. Adding a product to the list adds a video.
  • Check on-screen text for claims the same way you check listing copy. We run a 69-rule banned-word check that stops the render.

Etsy listing video requirements (October 2026)

From Etsy's help article on listing videos:

RequirementEtsy's ruleWhat we used for Elume
Length3 to 15 seconds14.5 seconds
File sizeUp to 100 MBAbout 0.6 to 1.3 MB each
SoundNo audio once uploadedSilent by design
ResolutionAt least 500px; 1080px or more is ideal1080 × 1080
Aspect ratioEtsy lists "2:1 or 1:2"Square (1:1)
Videos per listingUp to 21
File typesMP4, MOV, FLV, AVI, 3GP, MPEG and othersMP4

Etsy also says listing videos can help how listings appear in Etsy search. We chose square because Etsy's gallery is mostly seen on phones and a square frame avoids awkward crops. We also keep website addresses off screen and close on the brand's wordmark instead.

Watch out: Etsy's prohibited items policy applies to how an item is presented, including the images in a listing. Treat the text in your video the same way: a video caption that says "heals" or "treats" can get a listing removed just as the description can.

Shopify product video specs

Shopify's product media guide sets these limits for uploaded video, as of October 2026:

  • Length: up to 10 minutes.
  • Size: up to 1 GB.
  • Resolution: up to 4K (4096 × 2160).
  • File types: .mp4, .mov or .webm. Shopify converts and serves everything as MP4 or HLS streaming.
  • Embeds: you can link a YouTube or Vimeo video instead of uploading; other hosts aren't supported.
  • Theme support: your theme has to support product video. the Online Store 2.0 themes built by Shopify do.

Shoppers on streaming browsers see 480p, 720p or 1080p depending on their connection, so a 4K upload rarely shows as 4K. A 1080p file is plenty for a product page. Because Shopify's limits are so much looser, the practical rule is to design for Etsy's constraints and reuse the same file on Shopify.

What "template-built" product video means

Instead of filming each product, you design one video once, as a template, and feed it data. We use Remotion, a tool for making videos with code. Each video is a React component: the layout, motion, type and timing are written once, and a product list tells it what to show.

For a catalog, that changes the economics:

  • Every video matches. Fonts, colors, pacing and endings come from one shared theme file, so the brand system is defined once.
  • New products are cheap. Adding a product to the list and rendering again produces its video. No reshoot, no editor session.
  • Fixes apply everywhere. Change a color or tighten a caption rule, re-render, and every video updates.
  • It uses photos you already have. Our renders pull product photography straight from the store's image CDN.

The trade-off is the setup. Someone has to build the template, and that takes development time that a one-product shop won't earn back. Check the license too: as of October 2026, Remotion is free for individuals and for-profit companies with up to 3 employees; larger companies need a paid company license.

How we built 14 Etsy videos for Elume

Work we did for Elume Medspa included a square video for each of 14 Etsy listings in its house skincare line. Each is 1080 × 1080, 30 frames per second, 14.5 seconds and silent.

The build

  1. One product list and one theme file. The product list holds each product's details and photo links. The theme file holds the brand's colors, fonts and spacing.
  2. A crop-zoom component. Product photos often carry about 30% white padding around the bottle. The component crops into the product so it fills the frame instead of floating in white space.
  3. No prices, no product-card screenshots. Price tags and star ratings make a video feel like discount retail, and a price baked into a video goes stale the day the price changes.
  4. A claim check before render (more below).
  5. Scripted upload. All 14 went to Etsy through a script that confirms the listing title before writing, skips listings that already have a video, and compares image counts before and after, because Etsy can drop images silently. Every video read back as active.

Adding a product works the same way: it gets an entry in the product list, the render runs, and the upload script attaches the new video to the new listing.

From our work: the same system now accounts for 32 video files for Elume: the 14 Etsy listing videos, a 32-second shop film (also used as the Etsy shop's featured video), a 34-second serum film with a 13-second vertical teaser, two "Deep Dive" films in wide and vertical, a med spa services film, and 16 treatment films (8 treatments, each in wide 16:9 and vertical 9:16) built on licensed stock footage. None needed a shoot.

The 69-rule check on captions

Elume sells skincare, and Etsy is strict about anything that sounds medical. Etsy had removed some of the brand's listings over claim wording before we started, and a removed listing can't be reactivated through the API; it has to be created fresh. So every on-screen string runs through the same 69-rule banned-term table we use on listing copy. It covers words such as inflammation, antibacterial, acne, scars, heal, repair, clinical, prescription and treats.

The check is wired into the build: npm run lint:etsy aborts the render if any caption would be changed by the scrubber. A video with a risky word can't be produced, let alone uploaded. The safe vocabulary describes feel and appearance: soothe, calm, hydrate, protect, support, smooth.

We went further on the serum film, softening claims beyond what the store itself says (for example, dropping "anti-inflammatory"), because the same brand runs Meta and Google ads, which have their own health-claim policies.

Mistakes we made, so you don't

  • Dissolves made it feel like a slideshow. The first cut of one film was 7 shots joined with dissolves and read like a deck with video behind it. The rebuild has 18 shots, 16 of them hard cuts. We now set shot length by a reading rule of about 2.5 words per second plus half a second.
  • Stock footage broke the render. Clips with a default keyframe interval crashed the first render partway through. Re-encoding them with a keyframe every 15 frames and no B-frames fixed it.
  • AI imagery misspelled the brand. 7 of 13 AI-generated product assets had the brand name or web address wrong, and inpainting around a real product invented pumps and droppers the bottle doesn't have. Generate an empty scene, composite the real product photo, and check the whole clip, not one frame.
  • Checking one frame isn't checking. Before publishing, every file was OCR-checked frame by frame with labels magnified 4×. No misspelled label was published.

Options for non-technical owners

You don't need code to get a decent listing video. Pick the route that matches your catalog size.

A phone and a simple editor

Best for handmade or one-of-a-kind items, where each piece is different and a template saves nothing.

  • Shoot by a window in daylight, with the phone propped or on a cheap tripod. Steady beats fancy.
  • Record 3 or 4 short clips: the whole product, a slow turn, a close detail, and the product in a hand or in use for scale.
  • Trim to 15 seconds or less in your phone's built-in editor, and frame for square or vertical.
  • Add one or two short text lines for the points that matter, since there's no sound on Etsy.

Canva or a similar template tool

Best for 5 to 50 products where consistency matters but a coded template is overkill. Canva and similar tools offer product video templates: drop in your photos, edit the text, export an MP4. Save your own brand template the first time so every later video matches, and set the canvas to 1080 × 1080 before you start.

A coded template

Best for larger catalogs, frequent new products, or several formats per product (Etsy square, Shopify, Reels, ads). It costs the most up front and the least per video.

What to put in a 15-second product video

  1. Seconds 0 to 3: the product, large and clear. Shoppers decide fast.
  2. Seconds 3 to 10: two or three details you can't see in a still photo: texture, size in a hand, how it opens, how it hangs on a wall.
  3. Seconds 10 to 15: one short line about what it's for, then your wordmark.

Keep text large enough to read on a phone and on screen long enough to read. Leave out prices, ratings you can't attribute, and anything that sounds like a medical or performance claim. On a family frame shop's Etsy video we made, we deliberately left out the shop's Google rating, because on Etsy an unattributed rating reads as an Etsy rating.

Is it worth it?

Etsy says listing videos can help listings in search, and a video shows things photos can't, like scale and texture. We haven't measured a sales lift from these videos yet, so we won't claim one. What template video reliably gives you is coverage and consistency: every listing gets a video, every video matches, and the next product costs minutes, not a shoot. If you sell on both platforms, our Shopify vs Etsy comparison covers where each fits, and our content and video service builds systems like this one.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy play sound on listing videos?

No. Etsy's help center says listing videos won't contain any audio once uploaded, so music and voiceover are lost. Put every message on screen as text.

Can I use the same video on Etsy and Shopify?

Often, yes, if it's 15 seconds or less and under 100 MB, which fits both platforms' limits. A square video works on Etsy, Shopify product pages and most social feeds, though you may want a vertical 9:16 cut for Reels and TikTok.

Do I need a professional camera for product videos?

No. A recent phone in good light, held steady, is enough for a 15-second listing video. Light and steadiness matter more than the camera.

Are AI video generators good for product videos?

Use them with care. In our tests, AI-generated product imagery often misspelled brand names and invented details like pumps and droppers that the real product doesn't have. If you use AI, composite your real product photo and check every frame before publishing.
